Standards are the foundation of the internet. They provide the mechanism for different software packages, produced by a variety of vendors, running on different computer platforms to all work together. To implement trouble-free communication across a diverse population it is best to choose standards compliant technology. Using this criteria in making selections will provide the highest level of confidence that you will be able to communicate with other internet users.

Unfortunately, because standards tend to lag behind technology advances, selecting standards compliant technology may restrict the capabilities that can be provided. Where this limitation becomes critical, ways to assure interoperability across the target population and still provide the required capabilities need to be devised.
